One of my favorite things about card stock is the versatility available from a single sheet. This journal measures 6″ by 4″ and uses Solar White Linen card stock for all the cover art.

The subtle linen texture and matte finish on this bright white card stock provides a marvelous textured base for color application. Glimmering spray-on colors from Tattered Angels™, Ranger™ and LuminArte™ were sprayed as a base on portions while direct to paper ink “swipes” were applied to other areas. The bright white arrows on the front cover and inside front show the card stock in its “original condition.” The variance in appearance on colored areas comes from the intensity to which the inks are applied. The card stock retains the linen textured look and feel even after heavy ink applications.

Inspiration notes: I got the idea to create a journal like this from surfing You Tube for ideas to use with my Zutter bind-it-all™ machine.  I found this video from billieprd using index cards as the filler pages for a bound book. While my design differs greatly from the charming one she did, I would not have used index cards as the pages for a book without her impetus.

Assembly notes:

  • Zutter punch 6” by 4” index cards for fill pages (I used lavender ones from Oxfordâ„¢)
  • Cut book covers from chipboard that are 3/16 of an inch larger than filler pages
  • Cut Solar Linen pieces for covers and stamp art backgrounds
  • Use spray inks and direct-to-paper to decorate cut covers and backgrounds reserving some scraps of white for contrast use
  • TIP: I sprayed each piece separately using the same color combinations in different intensities so that the papers would all coordinate but not match. (see close up photo)
  • Tip: Use an ink pad from the same manufacturer as your spray colors for direct to paper and stamping.
  • Stamp and emboss images onto backgrounds ( I used Ranger(â„¢) distress ink and embossing powder for the front cover stamped image and really liked that effect with the sprays)
  • Trim stamp images (I didn’t use the entire image from Paper Artsyâ„¢ on this project but cut portions from a larger stamped image)
  • Cut arrow punches from undecorated and decorated portions
  • Glue cover art to covers and Zutterâ„¢ punch decorated covers
  • Cut and apply binding coil
  • Tie ribbons around the coils (Never underestimate the power of ribbons on a book binding; they really compliment almost every style. The luscious styles like Squares & Stitches Lavender/Parrot Green on this project really pump up the project.)
  • Tie charms and beads to the coils
  • Tip: use alcohol markers/ink to color a metal charm so that it matches your design like the hand charm in photo
  • For a fun finish I tied a sword shaped pen to this journal
